The challenge
Backups for self-hosted systems are often loose scripts: scattered credentials, lost logs and nobody sure the last backup works. BackupForge is the tool we use to run our own systems: each backup runs in a container that lives only as long as the job.
What we built
- Manual or scheduled backups with cron, time zones and configurable retention.
- Each job runs in an ephemeral Docker container and uploads its files to S3 or MinIO.
- A state machine per job, with retries.
- Live status and logs through Server-Sent Events.
- Secrets encrypted with AES-GCM, roles and an API documented with OpenAPI.
