The challenge
Frigate detects people and vehicles on the cameras, but its alerts stay inside its own app. We wanted the alert to reach the family's or the guard's WhatsApp, with the picture, and to be switched off from Home Assistant without touching the server.
What we built
- Listens to Frigate review events over MQTT and drops repeated updates for the same event.
- Sends a fast alert with the snapshot first, then the clip, transcoded with ffmpeg.
- WhatsApp messages through OpenClaw, without the official WhatsApp Business API.
- Home Assistant switches via MQTT Discovery: one global switch and one per camera.
- Cleans up temporary files so the disk doesn't fill up.
